Baklava

Baklava is believed to have originated from Central Asia and is a very popular and incredibly delicious sweet dessert which is hard to say no to. My wife and I love to visit Greece and we always eat a lot of this when we are out there as it is just too yummy! The recipe below was posted on my Greek Islands and Mainland Message board and I hope you enjoy making it, or if you are too lazy like me, then why not just drool over the picture above!

Ingredients

1 pack Filo dough
1/2 pound melted butter
1 pound ground walnuts
1 pound ground almonds
1 cup sugar

SYRUP
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup water
1/2 lemon, sliced
1 cup sugar

Recipe
Butter a square baking tray roughly about 12 × 12 in size. Cut 4 sheets of dough to size so they fit the pan and place them on the top of one another with a bit of melted butter sprinkled in between the layers. Then mix the ground nuts with the sugar and sprinkle around 4 large tablespoons onto the dough, then place another sheet of dough over it and continue building in this fashion, sprinkling nuts and little bit of the butter then placing a sheet of dough over it until the dough and nuts are used up. There should be approximately 15 layers or more. Then top with 3 more sheets of dough, (sprinkle butter in between) and press down on the dough firmly, but carefully.

Then carefully cut into diamond shaped pieces with a sharp knife. Dribble the last of the butter over the top of it and bake in a 300º oven for about 45 min., or until it is golden brown. Whilst cooking you can prepare the syrup. Boil together the honey, sugar, water and lemon until it thickens up in about 20 minutes. Pour the lemon and syrup over the Baklava as soon as it is removed from the oven. Let it stand until it is cool, then it is ready to serve. This will serve about 30 people but you can reduce the ingredients accordingly if you want to make smaller portions, otherwise you might end up eating it all in one go!

Enjoy.
