Going abroad and using your mobile phone with your normal service provider can cost you a packet in charges. My wife and I hired a motorboat on the Greek Island of Alonissos a couple of years ago and we suffered a mechanical breakdown while at sea. After 3 calls to the Boat hire agents, £10.00 of credit was used up in minutes, fortunately not before we had arranged rescue.
You can make drastic reductions in overseas call charges by purchasing an international Sim card before you travel.
These will work with virtually all unlocked phones and if your phone is locked there are a number of online services that will unlock it for you, normally for a small fee easily recovered by the savings you will make while using your phone abroad.
Global roaming Sim cards can be found online through various providers, which you can find by doing a simple search, for example Sim 4travel only charge 25p a minute for all calls to Europe. If you are planning to travel from the the United States Brightroam have International Sim card packages starting from $25.00. Many different packages are available that you can search through to best suit your requirements. Check these websites too for the costs you are likely to be charged phoning your home country from your destination to see who offers the best deals.
Another good tip is to turn off your voicemail before travelling otherwise you may incur extra charges for receiving a message.
Don’t forget to apply for your card in plenty of time before you travel otherwise you will end up paying rip off roaming charges like I did in Alonissos.
