Nestling under the Jura Mountains on the Franco-Swiss border lies the largest and most expensive experiment ever attempted by mankind. At a cost of £3.5 billion pounds the “Large Hadron Collider” will on Wednesday the 10th of September 2008 attempt to create a mini version of the Big Bang.
Particles travelling close to the speed of light will travel through an immense 17 mile long tunnel before colliding into each other, and scientist’s hope that this will re-create what happened immediately after the Big Bang when the universe came into existence.
Hopefully this will help in solving the little understood mysteries of “Dark Matter” and “Dark Energy”, which makes up the bulk of our universe.
To date the project has already had positive results by finding a way to make toxic radioactive waste safe. Future advances in cancer treatment and climate change research are also likely to happen.
A few skeptical scientists claim that if the experiment goes ahead then the Earth will be swallowed by a black hole, or be destroyed by a supernova in a doomsday scenario.
Fortunately the large bulk of scientific opinion refutes this claim as poppycock.
I can’t help wondering though, as I sit here typing, will this be my last ever blog post.
We will all find out soon enough though, won’t we!
